From Patient to Provider, from Educator to Advocate
Dr. Antoinette Leonard-Jean Charles founded CurateMed not from theory, but from lived experience. As someone who has navigated the healthcare system both as a patient and caregiver, she understands what it means to be dismissed, misdiagnosed, and overlooked. Living with a chronic condition since 2001, she has had to advocate fiercely for herself and her children, all while building a career in education, public health, and maternal wellness. These experiences shaped her empathy and her drive to challenge the systems and standards that continue to fail so many.
Dr. LJ holds a Doctorate in Educational & Professional Practice with a concentration in Multicultural & Anti-Racist Education. She is pursuing her M.D. while continuing to teach, consult, and build with individuals, institutions, and communities. Her work is intentionally intersectional, bridging medicine, education, and advocacy to create spaces where care is rooted in equity, identity is affirmed, and people are empowered to lead their healing.
Through CurateMed, Dr. Charles offers the kind of care and guidance she wished had been available to her earlier: care that centers lived experience, honors complexity, and is grounded in justice. Whether supporting a student, reviewing a grant proposal, guiding a postpartum parent, or co-creating a new curriculum, she leads with one principle: this work must be personal, because the harm people experience is personal too.
Dr. LJ embodies a rare blend of lived insight, academic expertise, and professional versatility. As a mother and chronic illness warrior, she understands firsthand the emotional and logistical challenges of navigating modern healthcare. As a doula and educator, she has supported others through transformational life stages, emphasizing the importance of culturally responsive, community-informed care. Now, as a medical student, she continues to challenge traditional models and advocate for holistic, accountable, and human-centered systems.
Through CurateMed, Dr. Charles is creating a practice that redefines what care can look like for individuals, families, and institutions alike.
